The Glass Bead Game
by John Michael Greer When I proposed in last week’s Archdruid Report post that readers write science fiction stories about the crisis of industrial society, I wasn’t thinking of Fed chairman Ben Bernanke as a potential author. Still, a speech of his that made the New York Times a few days back suggests that he’s got a sufficiently wild imagination for the job. In that speech, while trying to explain why shoveling trillions of dollars of money into the coffers of the banks that caused the Great Recession hasn’t done anything besides enriching bankers, Bernanke insisted that what’s wrong with the economy is that Americans are irrationally depressed about it. That, he claimed, is what’s keeping consumers from engaging in the binge spending that will get the economy moving again. You have to hand it to the man; it’s an extraordinary leap of fantasy. Out there in the real world, after all, a sixth of the US population is living below the poverty line.

Ten Days of Giveaways: Day Three: Garden and Glass Beads
Welcome to day three of the Ten Days of Giveaways here at the blog! The last two days have featured brand new work, but today I am looking back. I received a note from a good friend and customer today who said that she was first a little nervous when I started to change my style, but she really likes what I am doing now. She was probably referring to when I started being inspired by Steampunk, which is a critical point in the last few years, where my work started to change pretty drastically. Before Steampunk, I was doing much softer, organic, and natural designs, with some fun pop culture kinda cute designs mixed in. Much of my recent work has been more industrial and based on hardware and textures and creating a different feeling. The change seems like a natural and gradual transition to me, because the work I am doing now is very satisfying and is something that I have been seeking for many years.

“That Bead Store”
Hey W.E.S.T! So I heard back from the WECM today and cannot say that I’m overly excited. It would seem as though they feel that openning a retail storefront right away would be a foolish move. Although my feedback from everyone has been extremely positive they are firm that they would not approve me for openning a storefront. So I wanted to ask you all a few questions, and please feel free to contact me via e-mail with your replies. Would you go to a flea market to buy beads on weekends? (Mulvey Flea Market off Osborne ) Would you prefer the forks? How about waiting to buy beads and supplies once or twice a month at craft sales? Would free local shipping or a pickup option be appealing for “online buying” WECM feels that I should focus on e-commerce for the first year and local craft sales before going into getting a retail storefront. And I can’t say I agree.

Seed beads from Auntie’s Beads
Look at those seed beads ! I am particularly enamored of the gunmetal ones in the front of the picture, and I also really like the dark bronze ones. The package with the mixed colors is called granite , and I’m looking forward to using those too. The shape and size of these beads are very very regular, which is a big advantage if you wanted to use them for weaving as well as for embroidery. You know me…I never met a bead I didn’t like, but some are more universally useful than others, and I’m very pleased with the quality of these. They are Miyuki’s , so it shouldn’t be a surprise. Thank you to Auntie’s Beads for sending such a nice selection for me to work with. I use the larger size 8/0 beads pretty often, but turn to size 6/0 much less frequently. However, I had the perfect project waiting to try out the lovely silver-lined gold beads in size 6/0. My needle felted and embroidered leaf pin needed some accents, and these beads provided the finishing touch!

Kid’s Craft Review: ArtTerro Wire and Bead Art Kit
I opened the bag of beads and was satisfied with the color and materials selection. Most were glass, some were wood, and there some plastic ones as well. All had holes large enough to accommodate the wire. Since I was using one kit for two kids, I was a little underwhelmed with the amount of beads provided. My 5 year old LOVES beads and would use the ones provided in a minute! So I admit I dug into my bead stash and pulled out a few more to supplement.

Beads Santa Fe, NM
In the 70s, my sister and I tried making drawstring leather purses out of shammies on which we had sewn glass beads in Native American patterns a project from McCall’s Needlework, I think. It was tricky to keep the lines of bead work straight, and the design became more and more wonky as we progressed. Sally finished hers and it was pretty cute I became frustrated and gave up. After seeing all the lovely beading in Taos and Santa Fe, I got it in my head to give beading another try. I thought I might make some of the beaded alphabet letters I posted in 2009, or maybe even another Native American pattern. It might even be fun to try some of the smaller Anne Orr floral designs. At home I have an antique Iroquois beaded flat purse from the late 1800s a gift to my mother from her aunt and it has lovely beaded flowers on both sides. I’ll have to take a photo of it when I get home. There was a great little hole-in-the-wall bead shop in Santa Fe where I found everything I needed.

Beading My Way to Wellness
I choose beads which look and feel good together. It’s important for the jewelry to be comfortable and feel nice, otherwise no one will wear it. The texture factor also helps me identify my beads. Texture is definitely my friend!Get FeedbackOne of the important things to do when learning any new task is to get feedback. I did this by visiting a specialty beading store. As I shopped, I learned about new skills and tools to add to my beading skills toolbox. This sort of fits in with the social aspects of beading, but it’s also important from a learning perspective. You may pay more for the types of beads at a smaller independent shop, but the knowledge you gain is priceless.Shop the SalesIf you’re not sure if beading is something you want to take up, or you need a lot of beads, it’s sometimes worth looking at stores and their sales and coupons. Some craft stores will have 40% off sales and it’s a great way to get beads and supplies.

Stunning Glass Art: Sculptures made of Glass Beads
Like the Lego animal sculptures we featured yesterday? Today we will present you with another set of stunning animal sculptures made of thousands of glass beads. Kohei Nawa , the artist behinds those amazing glass art, is a sculptor and assistant professor at Kyoto University of Art and Design. He has done a lot of great artwork, while for me, his work in beads is particularly interesting. By covering surface of an object with transparent glass beads, the existence of the object itself is replaced by “ a husk of light “, and the new vision “the cell of an image” ( PixCell ) is shown. Those beautiful glass beads resemble huge dew drops, which make the sculptures incredibly sparkling. Really love how he beautifully incorporates nature… [ source ],[ source ]

Jeri L Warhaftig is already the author of one very fine Lark publication on glass bead making , so you might not think there’s a need for another. Wrong! Creating Glass Beads is different in scope and design from any other how-to book I’ve ever seen. Jeri introduces ten beads as projects, each one covering multiple intermediate and advanced techniques, from constructing hollow beads and mirroring the insides to creating advanced stringers and trying out lapidary work. Here’s the kicker: Jeri has invited fourteen project testers to try out her instructions and see what happened. I don’t know about you, but I’m extremely thankful to know that I’m not the only one who doesn’t always get it right the first time! And the variety of styles that grow from Jeri’s instructions will also be inspiring to everyone who likes to color outside the lines anyway! The step-by-steps are really clear, with excellent photographs, but the message is also clear: do what you want with these ideas!

Super Simple Beaded Bracelet
Today I’m going to show you how to make a really simple beaded bracelet. It’s a fun, quick project. Here are two I did and one my mom did. There are two slightly different versions shown above and I’ll give you the low down on both. I started with some leather and beads I got at Hobby Lobby. Both were in the jewelry making section. The beads were 1/2 off and often are. I used the full length of the leather strand to make the yellow bracelet. I started by folding the leather in half and tying a knot in the middle as shown. The loop I just created will become the button hole. For this particular bracelets I threaded both strands of leather through the bead. It is important to select beads with large holes for this project. I liked the big wooden ones. To make it easier to thread the beads you can use scotch tape around the end of the leather to create a pointed end. I added a bead…. and then tied a knot. I did this until I had enough to go around my wrist twice.

Last Minute Handmade Gift Idea #1: Bead Bracelets
Over the next two weeks I’ll be posting 12 ideas for last minute handmade gifts. The first idea? Bead bracelets. Chances are you have some beautiful beads languishing in your jewelry box or craft stash which would be perfect for making elasticized bracelets. If you don’t already have a supply of beads, try your local thrift store. You should be able to pick up a couple of chunky bead necklaces for a few dollars. Most necklaces will have enough beads to make at least 4 bracelets. Look for big beads; the bigger the better. Also, make sure the beads have fairly large holes. Here’s how to make a basic bead bracelet: Cut a piece of thin elasticized cord 9 inches (23 cm) long. Begin by threading an accent bead, pendant, pom pom etc. onto the cord and sliding it to the middle. If you are using plain beads of all the same size, you can just choose an end and start threading beads on to it. Keep adding beads until the bracelet is approx. 7 inches (18 cm) long.

Coppins Gifts is a Hallmark store plus! They have holiday decor and gift ideas, toys, plush, collectibles, and my favorite DaVinci Beads ! DaVinci Beads come in virtually every color and priced at just $6.99 each, they are incredibly affordable. You can choose from beads that represent special memories or hobbies, birthstone beads, or just choose them based on the designs and colors that you love. I was delighted to be able to pick out some DaVinci beads for a bracelet recently, and while I normally choose things for sentimental reasons, this time I just picked a fun swirly bead and some colors I love! This is how I put them on when I first wore my bracelet, but the cool thing is that I can switch them around anytime I like. The bracelet is designed to hold the beads on securely, but its still super easy to add and remove beads. Plus since the beads are so affordably priced, I am planning on buying lots of them. ********* Buy It!

Charm Bead Bracelets Make Charming Holiday Gifts for Girls of All Ages
Charm bracelet beads from Ohm Beads include a sock monkey, gift and castle. Credit: Ohm Beads The latest in beaded baubles has us charmed, we’re sure. Dangling charm bracelets? They’re sorta last year. Today, it’s all about charm beads, beautifully detailed European-style beads that are threaded on a bracelet, rather than attached with a ring, and are available in a slew of designs. Think sock monkeys and robots. Hearts and flowers. Owls and octopi. Ice skates and wedding cakes. Lattes and takeout boxes. If you can imagine it, there’s likely a charm to match. Kit Junya, owner and CEO of Ohm Beads , says costumers are drawn to charm beads because of their quality, size and multidimensionality. “The new style of European beads is substantial in weight,” she tells ParentDish. “The solid silver beads are attached to a bracelet via threaded cores that keep them securely attached.

2009 Beads Jewelry Fashion Trends Forecast

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Foreword: In 2009 you’ll see more bright and natural colors in fashionable beads jewelry…Spring of 2009 is right around the corner and there’s no better time to plan for the upcoming bead jewelry trends than right now, before the 2009 spring and summer seasons really begin! Predicting future fashion and jewelry trends is always a little bit of a game, but I’ve been reading a lot of fashion magazines, listening to my customers that visit my bead jewelry display table and generally talking to people about what they are looking for. There are some definite trends for 2009 and here are some of the things I’m hearing:Colorful and NaturalI have seen some emphasis on “nature” influences which sometimes shows itself in the materials such as wood or stone beads use in jewelry, but I’ve also seen a lot more “flower” and “leaf” shaped beads and pendants on the scene. Any sort of botanical or organic looking jewelry pieces or beads are still popular from what I’ve seen. I don’t make much, but I’ve actually had people asked me if I have anything that has “natural warmth”. Big and BeautifulIt sounds like the days of dainty shiny pieces of metal jewelry are gone for the moment and the big and colorful gemstone jewelry and beads are still pretty hot right now. People are still asking for more “chunky” jewelry, sometimes with larger stones and crystals that catch the eye, sometimes with asymmetrical patterns or at least oddly cut beads and gemstones. Cocktail RingsIf you’re shopping, wearing or making rings, consider “rings with bling!” Cocktail rings are generally over-the-top diamond or gemstone rings that are overly colorful, shiny and, yes, sometimes a bit gaudy. But that’s part of the fun! These go along with the bright and bold bead jewelry you might be wearing and could even match or compliment it with similar gemstones or beads. You can make cocktail rings with gemstone beads, crystal beads or just about any other shiny materials. Charms and PendantsAgain, going with the bold and bright bead jewelry, what stands out more than a beautiful chain that meets with a large bold diamond or gemstone charm or pendant on the end?Modern MetalsYes, natural and chunky are in, but there is still room for metals in beaded jewelry, especially when it is sleek and modern looking or even mixed with natural materials like wood and stone beads. There are always people who like the more “modern” beads and jewelry as opposed to the more traditional bead jewelry designs. You can buy modern beads for jewelry making or you can go for a more unique look and actually make beads jewelry out of hardware washers!Silver and GoldSilver has been popular for the last few years and that will probably continue, but you’ll also see more gold and even two-tone chains and metals being used in both beads and jewelry pieces. Some of those silver and gold Trollbeads are excellent examples of mixed metals being used as a charm or pendant in bead jewelry pieces. Faux Foreign InfluenceI’m still seeing a lot of Asian and Moroccan influences in fashion, home furnishings and even jewelry. The influences don’t have to be completely genuine or “realistic” but that sense of something coming from a foreign country and past time are still popular. Even the big chain stores are catching this vibe and a lot of their house wares and jewelry give off that “Pier One” vaguely Indian or Eastern Orient vibe. When you’re creating bead jewelry necklaces or bracelets you could think about using dark wooden beads (natural) and mixing it with large metal Oriental looking coins and rings with a hole through the center to bring in the foreign feel!ColorfulYou’ll want to think about bright and bold, but remember that natural element! Neons and wild synthetic colors are not popular, but bright natural colors definitely are in, both in clothing and jewelry fashion. Once again, I have to turn to the color experts at Pantone who have picked out the trendy colors for 2009. Don’t forget to look at the 28 page Adobe Acrobat guide there! It’s fun and inspirational! I’m thinking about printing a few of the pages out and hanging them around my beading area for inspiration when I’m creating my jewelry. Last, if you have seen any other bead jewelry trends for 2009 that I missed, pls don’t hesitate to let me know. . .
